Adam Beach was born on November 11, 1972 in Ashern, Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Saulteaux tribe, and lived on the Dog Creek Reserve. The Saulteaux tribe is a branch of the Ojibwa nation. Saulteaux is French for “people of the rapids.” They lived near water so they were hunters and fishers, not farmers. They had a variety of different ceremonies including: sweat lodges, a pipe ceremony, a rain and sun dance, and a council dance. A common thing for them was the number four. They would always give gifts in fours. These gifts were never better than the other, they were considered equal. The gifts would their four elements: rock, fire, wind and water.

Beach had many unfortunate events that occurred throughout his life. The biggest event was when his father and mother died. When he was eight his mother, Sally Beach, was killed by a drunk driver when she was crossing the street in front of her house. At the time she was eight months pregnant with Beach’s sister. Only a few short months later, Adam’s dad, Dennis Beach; who was an alcoholic, was drowned and killed in a boating accident. His death was either accidental or a suicide, but no one knows for sure. After his parents deaths, Beach and his two brothers moved to live with their aunt and uncle in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After about six years, he moved into another aunt and uncles home.

Adam attended Gordon Bell High School, and chose to take a drama class for fun with his friends. Although, he realized through taking the drama class, acting was his true passion. His biggest inspiration was Johnny Depp because his is part Cherokee. Beach dropped out of the 11th grade to play the lead role in Red River Valley at Manitoba Theater for Young People. From this point on Adam’s career sky-rocketed. During his acting years he married his first wife Meredith Porter in 1999, and had two children, Noah and Luke. Meredith and Adam divorced in 2002. Then in 2003 he remarried a woman name Tara Mason. Then in 2007, they got a divorce. Recently in 2008, Adam and his recent girlfriend, Summer, had a girl named Phoenix.

Adam’s breakout role was in the mini-series Lost in The Barrens when he was 18. He then went on to act in a variety of television shows including: Touched by An Angel, Walker Texas Ranger, Law and Order: SVU, and Lonesome Dove. He also acted in a few Disney movies including, Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale and Mystery Alaska, with Russell Crow. Some other movies he acted in were: The Last Stop, Joe Dirt, The Art of Whoo and Windtakers (featuring Nicolas Cage). One of his big movies was Smoke Signals. This was the first movie that was completely written, directed, produced, and acted by Native Americans. The role he played, Victor Joseph, had a very similar life growing up. They both had alcoholic fathers that both died. It was a very emotional movie for him. Another big movie he played in was Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. This role also reflected his life, in that his (and the role he played) both had parents that died when he was young. During the filming of the movie Flags of our Fathers, Adam’s grandmother and best friend died. As you can tell Adam lost a lot of people that were very close to him during all parts of his life.

Adam Beach was nominated and won a variety of awards for his acting. He won Best Actor for the movies Dance Me Outside, My Indian Summer, and Smoke Signals. He was also nominated for Best Actor for the movies Luna: Spirit of the Whale, and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee; and Best Supporting Actor for Flags of Our Fathers.

Currently Adam is living in Los Angeles, California, and occasionally goes back to his hometown in Canada. He is currently trying become the leader of his Lake Manitoba First Nation tribe. Adam is in the process of setting up his own film company. His film company is going to feature films created by First Nation Filmmakers. He often visits schools and speaks to native children and tells them that their dreams can come true. Even though Adam has had a rough life, he is making the most of it.
